FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Minot A. Frye Appointed President and CEO of E/CON Building Systems
Minot A. Frye, former senior executive in the financial services and real estate industries, has been appointed President and CEO of E/CON Building Systems LLC, a new company founded to design and develop very low-energy commercial housing. E/CON is an affiliate of EGA Architects, a nationally recognized leader in the planning and design of senior living facilities.
“EGA has earned a reputation as an innovator in senior living design,” notes EGA Chairman, Charles Griffin. “Our association with E/CON enables us to actively advance innovations in energy efficiency. This is important on many levels to us, to our clients and to the residents of the communities we design.”
E/CON’s objective is to build commercial housing that earns an energy ranking 60-75 percent lower than the industry standard, that is competitively priced and designed for a mainstream market.
One of the nationally recognized standards in energy rating is the HERS Index, a scoring system established by the Residential Energy Services Network. A home built exactly to 2006 building-code would earn a HERS Index ranking of 100. Industry estimates suggest that the average ranking for residential buildings built prior to 2006 is about 140-150. The lower the HERS Index rating, the better the energy efficiency.
“E/CON’s target HERS Index ranking,” notes Frye, “is 20-30.” To achieve this, the firm has developed a unique model to measure and evaluate the prospective energy efficiency of a building during design. Says Frye, “We’ve developed a predictive model that illustrates how a building will use energy. It analyzes a tremendous amount of data to produce a very detailed view of the building before we build it.”
The result is that E/CON can determine the best construction method, materials and process for building a very energy- efficient house at the lowest cost. E/CON’s first- generation products target the needs of senior living communities.
In keeping with the firm’s objective of appealing to a mainstream market, E/CON’s commercial housing reflects a traditional design aesthetic. “What we seek to provide,” says Frye, “is a “triple-play”—a conventional-looking house, with a very competitive price and very low energy consumption.”
